Profile of Musa Xinwa

Msawenkosi (Musa) Xinwa was born in Flagstaff in the Eastern Cape in 1980. A construction manager and quantity surveyor by profession, he completed his studies in 2004 at Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

His early career was spent with Skye Demolition and Earthworks, Iskhokho Projects cc and Nanza Facilities Management & Construction Projects and included projects such as Somerset Mall (Refurbishment) valued at R22 million  (2003), Crtwrights corner valued at R30 million (2004), Dock site valued at R45 million (2005), KZN Infrastructure Development –Clinics –KZN Health valued at R98 Million (2009/2010) amongst others.

His current project, Blueberry Lane in Burgundy Estate, Cape Town is his first project under the company Exar Development & Construction Pty Ltd, which was formed out of a joint venture with Dutch company Reinbouwgroup.

Musa Xinwa approached the Dutch business development organisation PUM through their local officer Lesley Africa; this led to Musa Xinwa being invited to the Netherlands for a traineeship in 2008. A meeting with Reinbouwgroep followed, both parties realised that they had common goals and the Development & Construction company Exar was created, of which Musa Xinwa is Managing Director.

Musa Xinwa chose this career with the lofty vision of not only making a secure living, but also to create much-needed housing and employment opportunities in South Africa; a vision that is shared by Bas Reinders the Managing Director of Reinbouwgroep, Holland and a Director of Exar Development & Construction Pty Ltd.  Bas Reinders toured South Africa for the first time in 2006 with his daughter and was impressed and in turn depressed by what he saw. “On the one hand a country with everything you could wish for… on the other hand the huge mass of poor jobless people without a steady income, hardly educated and living in degrading conditions”. This experience was the fertile soil upon which the joint venture with local entrepreneur Musa Xinwa came about.

Peter Reinders of PJ Consultants, Holland is another director of Exar. His frequent visits to South Africa and his international expert consulting and project management experience ensure that Musa Xinwa and the Exar management team is strengthened and optimised.

Exar’s first development, Blueberry Lane is a R39 million development situated within the Burgundy Estate in the Durbanville Hills which abuts the vineyards of the Durbanville wine area and the historic De Grendel wine estate. It consists of 24 apartments from R699 000 with garage and braai facilities and 23 townhouses from R888 000 with garage and braai facilities.

Exar has now created more than 30 direct job opportunities and many more indirect opportunities through subcontracts.

The construction of the townhouses is 80% complete with many already sold and occupied. Construction of the apartments is currently underway and due for completion in April 2013.
